COMMENTARY: President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem right step

KNI has reported on the potential ramifications of U.S. President Donald Trump’s speech and posted the entire video and White House text of the speech so that readers can listen to or read every word and decide if there is anything inflammatory in the speech.

In my opinion, the words are not inflammatory, but the reaction by the Muslim world is. The critical reaction to the speech by European allies, the U.S. mainstream media, and even Democratic members of the U.S. Senate who voted for U.S. Public Law 104 – 45 – Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995 is not helpful to the cause of peace. Actually they give aid and comfort to the Muslim world to demonstrate against the move.

Some critics of the speech say they agree in principle, but this is not the time. I ask: “If not now when?” This has been a debatable issue since 1948, which escalated in 1967 when Israel unified the city during the Six Day War, after being attacked by Jordan. In all these years we have not moved closer to peace.

The word “Jerusalem” appears 648 times in the Tenach and 144 times in the New Testament. That’s 792 times in the Judeo-Christian scriptures versus zero times in the Muslim Quran. Jerusalem did not seem important to the writers of the Quran. Jews have always longed to return to Jerusalem. Psalm 137, written long before the Quran, is just one example.

“If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand wither.
May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth
if I cease to remember you,
if I do not set Jerusalem above my chief joy.”
