Yeshua is God (Part 2)

There are many prophecies in the Tanakh (Old Testament) that reveal the divine nature of the promised Messiah (Christ). These are prophecies that most Israelis are not aware of because they are used to thinking about the Messiah as a human king from the seed of David who will deliver Israel and the Jewish people from their enemies and rule from Jerusalem during a Messianic era of peace and justice. This is definitely true, but it is only part of the truth. The Messiah is fully God and fully human and His dual nature is revealed through the Tanakh (OT). Let’s look at several OT prophecies that reveal that He is God.

A Virgin will have a baby?

Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel”
This child who will be born miraculously by a virgin will be called Immanuel, which in Hebrew means “God is with us”. This child is God born into the world to be with us in human flesh. He is mentioned again by His name, Immanuel, in Isaiah 8:8, saying that the land of Israel belongs to Him, and in Isaiah 8:10, saying that the evil counsel against Judah will come to nothing because Immanuel (because God is with us).

The Son is Mighty God

Isaiah 9:6-7 “For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of [His] government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore”

This child who will be born (which means He is human) is clearly the Messiah, as the prophecy speaks about Him sitting on the throne of David and ruling in peace and justice forever. The amazing thing here is the names given to Him: Mighty God, Eternal Father. Clearly names reserved only to God. Two chapters after the prophecy about Immanuel, there is another strong confirmation that the Messiah is God born in a human form.

Father, Son and Holy Spirit in Old Covenant

Isaiah 48:12-16 “Listen to Me, O Jacob, even Israel whom I called; I am He, I am the first, I am also the last. Surely My hand founded the earth, And My right hand spread out the heavens; When I call to them, they stand together. Assemble, all of you, and listen! Who among them has declared these things? The LORD loves him; he will carry out His good pleasure on Babylon, And His arm [will be against] the Chaldeans. I, even I, have spoken; indeed I have called him, I have brought him, and He will make his ways successful. Come near to Me, listen to this: From the first I have not spoken in secret, From the time it took place, I was there. And now the Lord GOD has sent Me, and His Spirit.”

These verses might seem confusing at first look. Who is speaking? Is it the same one who speaks through the whole portion? Yes and No. It is the same One God who is speaking in these verses, but in some parts it is the Father speaking and in other parts it is the Son (Yeshua the Messiah) speaking.

In the first part, it is clear that God is speaking. He is the first and the last. He founded the earth and the heavens. But then a question is asked: Who has declared this? The answer in the following verses is that this is someone whom the LORD loves (and who will crush Babylon (Revelation 17-18)). But it was God himself who declared it. Who else has founded the earth? Clearly there is a secret here and it is revealed partly in the following verses as the Son declares “I have spoken”, and the Father says “I have called Him, I have brought Him and He will make His ways successful”. Who is He whom will make His (the Son’s) ways successful? He is the Holy Spirit! The final verse (v. 16) puts it all together when as Son declares that He has been there since forever and now the Lord God (the Father) sent Him and His Spirit to the world. How beautiful! The three persons of God revealed in one verse!
