And there was war in heaven, Michael and his angels waging war with the dragon. The dragon and his angels waged war… And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. -Revelation 12:7,9
The above Bible verses tells us that millenia ago, a war broke out in Heaven between Satan and the Archangel Michael and their angelic forces. The verse goes on to say that as a result of that war, Satan and the dark angels were cast out of Heaven and they have existed here on the Earth ever since. As a result of that, from the day that Cain killed his brother Abel, human beings have been killing each other in incomprehensible numbers. World War II alone claimed the lives of more than 80 million people – each and every one was created and loved by the God of Israel.
In the Middle East, the conflict between the sons of Abraham has been claiming lives for almost 4000 years, and shows no sign of ending any time soon. This conflict has drawn other nations into it over the last 2000 years, and is still doing so in 2017. In fact, it appears to be about to erupt in a very serious way. The civil war in Syria had been raging for more than 5 years, and has cost the lives of more than 300,000 Syrians and created a huge refugee problem in many parts of Europe. If you have been watching the news over the last week, you will be aware that a large number of Syrian adults and children have become the victims of a chemical weapons attack. This in turn prompted President Trump to fire 59 cruise missiles at the Syrian airfield, from which it is claimed that the chemical attack was launched.
Most government leaders and news media sources lay the blame for the chemical attack at the door of the Syrian government led by President Assad. However, the situation becomes very complicated and sensitive because Russia and Iran support Assad, and in his defence they are accusing the USA of unwarranted aggression that verges on a ‘war crime.’ Russia stands with Assad in denying that the Syrian government carried out the attack. The previously warm rapport between Putin and Trump has cooled down over the last few days, and the statements coming out of the White House and the Kremlin are hotting up. More seriously, America is now sending more of its navy to the Middle East, and in response Russia is also sending another aircraft carrier to the area.
The US military was very careful to give Russia advanced notice of its attack against the Syrian airbase, and I would say extreme caution was used to ensure none of the missiles landed anywhere near Russian forces that are deployed inside Syria. However, there is no guarantee when extremely powerful missiles are being fired at multiple targets. Just one unfortunate misfire could kill a large number of Russian personnel, resulting in a major diplomatic crisis between the USA and Russia. In the past serious conflicts, costing multitudes of lives, have started over such incidents.
Here in Israel, we are watching the Syrian situation very closely, as it is unfolding a mere 200 kilometers or 140 miles from where we live on Mt Carmel. In a confirmation of our concern, we just heard on CNN news that Russian and Iran are warning that if the US attacks Syria again, they will respond with force. As I am writing this, the new US Secretary of State is flying to Moscow to discuss the situation and to encourage President Putin to stop supporting Assad. We also heard that the US Stock Market is very nervous about the US – Russia standoff over Syria and one financial ‘expert’ warned that any kind of conflict between the USA and Russia could lead to a Global financial melt-down.
Meanwhile on the other side of the world, the USA is also sending navy vessels towards North Korea in response the the rogue nation’s ongoing missile launches. Who knows what that could lead to! In the late 1990’s we were told that the approaching “Age of Aquarius” would bring world peace in the new millenium – how wrong they were! However, to end on a positive note, YHVH – the God of Israel is still sitting on the ‘Throne’ of the Universe. He neither slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121:4) and He is still in control of every nation and every leader, and He will bring His plan to fulfillment – to re-establish His Kingdom on the Earth and to send His Son `Yeshua back to rule His Kingdom from Jerusalem. The sooner the better!
As the winds of war increasingly grow stronger, let us all play our part in hastening the day that Yeshua returns (2 Peter 3:12) to Jerusalem to judge the nations and to establish true peace, by standing with Israel and praying for all of the words of the prophets to be fulfilled. (Acts 3:21)
