US Ambassador to UN: Security Council must focus on Iran, and its partner militia, Hezbollah, not Israel

The United States called on the United Nations Security Council to switch its obsession on Israel and focus on the “chief culprit” of conflict in the Middle East: Iran.

During the Security Council monthly meeting on Thursday, entitled “The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question,” the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, addressed Israel bias and called on the Council to focus on the Iran and Hezbollah opposed to Israel bashing.

Addressing the 15-member council, Haley, who is currently the rotating president of the council this month, stated “The Israel-Palestinian issue is an important one, deserving of attention. But that is one issue that surely has no lack of attention around here… We have lots of meetings on specific countries and conflicts in this region but this debate is our opportunity to talk about the Middle East as a whole.”

She pointed out the ongoing and blatant Israel bias in the United Nations, specifically in the Security Council, stating, “Regrettably, these monthly meetings routinely turn into Israel-bashing sessions. That’s the way the Security Council has operated for years. It’s a formula that is absurdly biased against one country. It’s a formula that is painfully narrow in its description of the conflicts in the region.”

She called on the council to focus on Iran, stating, “If we are speaking honestly about conflict in the Middle East, we need to start with the chief culprit, Iran, and its partner militia, Hezbollah. For decades they have conducted terrorist acts across the region… Iran is using Hezbollah to expand its regional aspirations. That is a threat that should be dominating our discussions at the Security Council.”

She spoke of Iran’s involvement in Syria, Lebanon and Yemen, addressing its funding of terror and sponsorship of Islamic terrorism, stating that Iran “prop up Bashar al-Assad’s brutality, fighting alongside his forces, adding to the killing of thousands of civilians and the misery of millions of refugees. They train deadly militias in Iraq, and arm Houthi militants in Yemen.”

She stated that the United States will not sit idly and will shift the council to focus on the real issues, stating, “While this council has paid too little attention to this growing menace, the United States will not. We are going to speak up about Iran and Hezbollah, and we are going to act against their lawlessness.”

On the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, she affirmed the United States position that the peace process can only be reached through direct negotiations between both parties stating, “Peace will only come from direct negotiations not from one sided security meetings and one sided resolutions. By breaking out of old familiar counterproductive patterns, we might actually achieve something valuable.”
