Germany approves deal to sell nuclear-capable submarines to Israel

Germany approved a deal to provide Israel’s Navy with three nuclear-capable submarines on Friday, as Israel increases its nuclear defense capabilities.

The sale was approved by Germany’s National Security Council and Israel’s Ministry of Defense as reported by Germany’s Der Spiegel Friday with several media outlets confirming the submarine sales.

According to the report, Israel approved the purchase of the new submarines for $1.3 billion with Germany agreeing to cover a third of the costs.

Germany’s shipbuilders ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems will sell the submarines to Israel, the first of the three submarines currently being built.

Israel and Germany confirmed negotiations for the purchase in September of 2015 when Israel purchased four patrol ships to patrol and protects its offshore oil rigs in the Mediterranean.

Israel already has five Dolphin Class submarines including three Dolphin-class submarines and two Dolphin 2-class submarines, all capable of carrying nuclear warheads or “second strike” options.

The report did not specify predicted delivery dates for the submarines.
