Former IDF Intelligence head: Strikes in Syria overnight not routine

Former IDF Intelligence head, Amos Yadlin, addressed Israel’s airstrikes on a Syrian chemical weapons factory overnight Thursday, addressing Iran, Israel’s right to defend itself, Russian air defense systems and Hezbollah.

He wrote on Thursday “The reported attack overnight is not routine. It is a military-scientific Syrian site in which they produce, among other things, precision missiles, some of which will be significant in the next military campaign,” emphasizing that the factory struck manufactures “chemical weapons and explosives that have killed thousands of Syrian civilians. If it was an Israeli attack, it is finally an Israeli moral statement about the massacre in Syria.”

He stated that the strikes sent three important messages, “Israel won’t allow for empowerment and production of strategic arms. Israel intends to enforce its redlines despite the fact that the great powers are ignoring them. The presence of Russian air defense does not prevent airstrikes attributed to Israel. Now it’s important to keep the escalation in check and to prepare for a Syrian-Iranian-Hezbollah response and even opposition from Russia.”

Late Thursday morning Syria confirmed the strikes, reporting four Israeli jets carrying out strikes around 2:30 am Thursday. It stated “Israeli warplanes fired several rockets from the Lebanese airspace at 02:42 a.m. on Thursday targeting one of the Syrian military posts near Massyaf, killing two army personnel and causing material damage to the site and that Syria “warns of the serious consequences of these kinds of aggressive activities against the security and stability in the region.”

The strikes are the most significant attack from Israel in Syria since it destroyed Syria’s nuclear reactor at al-Kibar in 2007.
