IDF Northern Command drill simulates large-scale war with Hezbollah

The Israel Defense Forces, navy and Air Force continued its largest military drill in nearly two decades on Tuesday, conducting exercises in the north of Israel, from its borders to south of the Galilee region.

The two-week drill, referred to as “Or HaDagan”, will likely end this Thursday, the drill centered on scenarios of war with Hezbollah.

Since last week, exercises began on defense techniques and scenarios which then progressed into drills and war games centered on offense and infiltration. Tuesday marked the 11th day of the drill, thousands of soldiers participating in a wide-scale war scenario in which Hezbollah infiltrates Israel.

Numerous divisions of the IDF including combat units, the cyber defense division and communications divisions have all participated in the Northern Command war games.

The drill has included thousands of soldiers and reservists. This week the drills have mainly focused on offense, with war games including the use of missile defense technology, ships, jets, helicopters, drones, canine units and much more.

The IDF summarized its capabilities and the intentions for the exercises stating “The IDF is very advanced in the technological world, the world of intelligence, combat, and maneuvering. The exercise is a clear expression of this. We’re adapting the improvements to the challenges that we see in the context of the northern region and Hezbollah.”

In a war situation, Hezbollah would reportedly be capable of firing between 1,500-2,000 missiles at Israel daily. The terrorist organization includes over 40,000 militants with increasing activity in Syria.

The drills have focused on combatting any infiltration while under heavy rocket fire. They has also included numerous mock offensive missions and scenarios in southern Lebanon.

In August, head of Hezbollah’s executive council, Hashem Safieddine, warned of Israel’s soon “demise” claiming that in Hezbollah’s next attack on Israel it will include ground forces that will infiltrate Israel “further” than the Galilee. He stated, “We are only becoming more convinced in our belief that Israel is closer than ever before to its demise… The time for operations will come… When we talk about Israel’s demise, we are not talking about something falling from the skies, but rather, about an attack that will be launched from down here. We are talking about our capabilities, our manpower, our weapons, our expertise, and the support we receive from the peoples.”
